Gail Donohue, NCCP Competition Development Master Learning Facilitator

Coaches trained in Managing Conflict will be able to identify common sources of conflict in sport, as well as individuals and groups likely to find themselves in conflict situations. They will gain skills in taking steps to prevent and resolve conflict resulting from misinformation, miscommunication, or misunderstanding. They will also develop skills that empower them to listen and speak for themselves in conflict situations so as to maintain positive relationships with athletes, parents, officials, and other coaches. Modeling such behaviour by a coach is the basis for athletes to enhance emotional development and handle the conflict of national and/or international competition.

Dave Newson, BC Athlete Voice ED

The athletes that have the biggest impact in sport, who really make a difference, are those that lead. Yet how often do we think about leadership? Discuss leadership with athletes? Take the time to plan and practice leadership development? Can we even teach or coach leadership? Learning to lead provides some fundamental concepts for introducing leadership learning for coaches working with athletes of all levels. Sport already provides the best classroom for learning about leadership – at every training or practice session and every time an athlete competes. Through this session we’ll look at innovative ways we can work with athletes to ensure they not only excel in the field of sports, but also in the pursuit of life.

Chris Johnson - Being The Best Coach You Can Be

A good coach will make a better player, a great coach will make a better person! Sometimes we forget that we are not coaching soccer, gymnastics, ringette, hockey, rugby, etc but that we are coaching PEOPLE. Winning means more than trophies. It means life long leisure skills, friends, attitudes to life, values, and feelings of self worth. We have to coach our athletes with those outcomes in mind, realizing that results on the scoreboard are not necessarily the most important ones.
